Nintendo will officially end production of the Wii U this coming Friday, according to multiple sources.

Eurogamer has reported on a number of sources confirming the company will cease production of its console later this week.

Since launching in November 2012 the console has sold an underwhelming 13.36 million units worldwide, far less than Nintendo had originally anticipated.

To put things in perspective, the Nintendo Gamecube sold 21 million, with the Wii managing an impressive 101 million units during its lifespan.

According to Eurogamer, Nintendo has put in its very last orders to the production company, with no further enquiries to be made in the future.

The Wii U managed to sell several million units following its release in 2012, but this momentum is almost non-existent at this point.

Nintendo has released a fantastic library of games for the system, but none of these have captured the interest of mainstream gamers.

The company’s next platform, Nintendo Switch, is set to launch in March 2017 alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
